ACM radio bio entry

Radio stations are granted a license to operate by the Federal Communications Commission with one main purpose:  To serve the needs of its local community.  And Jack Ryan has stood right beside his friends and neighbors in need on Knoxville, Tennessee radio stations for 23 years.

But, the greatest time of need for his area didn’t come this past fall, when East Tennessee was ravaged with one of the worst natural disasters in the state’s history.  The wildfires in Gatlinburg and Sevier county engulfed tens of thousands of acres, killed 14 people, displaced more than 14,000 others and destroyed over 2,000 buildings, businesses and homes.

To help with the recovery efforts, Jack:

  • Promoted extensively, was on site and on stage for a free concert with country star Rodney Atkins to benefit the Wildfire Victims
  • Hosted a Boy Scout dinner to honor the firefighters and emergency personnel from the area
  • Emceed a dinner recognizing officials from the area and announced his stations would be making a $250,000 donation in free advertising to the chambers to help bring business back
  • And, worked tirelessly to promote the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, Dollywood, the Country Music Association, and numerous other local agencies committed to fundraising for those displaced

This past year, Jack has:

  • Promoted the Epilepsy Foundation’s Mardi Gras Party Fundraiser
  • Met with the mayor and helped organize the “Battle at Cumberland” scavenger hunt on the campus of the University of Tennessee
  • Assisted in a East Tennessee Children’s hospital fundraiser with actor/singer Lawson Bates from “Bringing up Bates.”
  • Hosted the City of Oak Ridge's 4th of July Celebration
  • Put together a free cruise for listener’s on the Star of Knoxville riverboat
  • Was on site for the “Secret City Festival” along with country star Charlie Daniels
  • Spoke twice to a class at Farragut High school
  • Co-hosted the “PBS Scholar’s Bowl” consisting of 53 area high schools
  • Was the Grand Marshal in the New Market Easter parade
  • Broadcasted live from the Congressman Duncan free Bar B Que and concert with Mark Chesnutt
  • Helped with efforts to combat drug abuse in two counties
  • Organized the “Kick for Cash” contest giving 10 people a chance to win $1,000 at high school football games
  • Encouraged listeners to vote for a local elementary school which led to a $100,000 grant for a new playground
  • And for the 7th year in a row hosted the “CTE Goes Live” finals, a singing contest with contestants from each Knoxville high school.

During his radio career, Jack Ryan has helped raise millions of dollars for local charities, organizations, and community programs and just this year was nominated for radio station personality of the year from the Academy of Country Music.
